Cole

Cole dialed Ethan’s number, knowing it was time that he gave his crew more information. As soon as Ethan picked up, Cole began telling him all about what was happening.

“So, let me get this straight. You’re dating a cop, and practically living with her. All the while, some unknown assailant is trying to take her out? Do I have that right?” Ethan’s voice was full of disbelief, tinged with a little bit of laughter.

“When you put it like that, I guess it does sound a little far-fetched. But man, I tell you, I saw the shit with my own eyes. Someone’s out to get Ebony, and I need to find out who it is. Although she’s been a detective on the police force for years and has people covering her back, I’d feel better if we had some of our guys looking into the situation. I know this isn’t what we normally do. But this time, I think I need some help.”

Cole had been working with Ebony and her partner Detective Harris on trying to figure out who the people calling the shots were. He knew they were getting close because they were getting stonewalled at every turn. Doors that were once open to Ebony and her partner were now closed. Each time Ebony tried to talk with her Lieutenant about returning to work. He told her to go home and rest. Something was going on, and Cole didn’t know how far up it went. Ebony was getting tired of waiting, and he was afraid she would go off half-cocked and do something on her own.

“So how much do you care about this chick Ebony?”

It was a fair question. Ethan was asking. If he was going to put their team, or any of their guys in danger, Ethan wanted to know just how involved he was. “On this one, man, I’m all in.”

“Wait, is this the woman who lives across the street from you? The one who rides the bike?”

Cole had told Ethan and Tyler both about Ebony. Although he’d never shared how much of a chicken-shit he was when it came to approaching her. Neither of them knew that he’d been pining over her for over a year. But now. He’d have to put all his dirty laundry in the street. It wasn’t that he didn’t trust these guys, because he did. It was his own hesitation to share more of himself. He’d come to his senses when it was almost too late. Once she’d almost been taken from him, and that was unacceptable.

“Yeah, she’s the one. So, are you going to help me or not?”

“Of course, I am. I don’t know why you didn’t ask for our help before now. We could have been working on this for over a month now. No one would have cared if you’d asked us to help on this. You don’t have to do shit like this on your own. We’re a team. You have to know that by now.” Frustration filled Ethan’s voice, and it came over the phone loud and clear.
